Set Your Intention
I am ready for anything that this day brings.
Trauma affects the way we think and feel about everything. The hurtful words and actions that we have experienced can literally change the way our brain is wired to think. Sometimes we are aware of the change, and sometimes it is completely subconscious.
As a trauma survivor, you might notice that your thoughts are often negative. You might feel negative thoughts about others, and you might feel negative thoughts about yourself. You might even notice that you sabotage yourself by quickly giving up or putting yourself down as soon as you start to feel better.
When you notice the voice inside your head turning negative, you can catch it and turn it around. This will help you begin to heal. To do this, you need to replace the negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Positive affirmations can help you begin to rewire your brain.
You probably notice that there are a few negative things you say about yourself frequently. For example, if something goes wrong you might find yourself say, “I am such an idiot.”. Your positive affirmations need to be the opposite of the negative messages you say about yourself. If you catch yourself calling yourself an idiot, change the message you are sending yourself. Instead, say, “I am smart, I try to make good decisions, and I am doing my best.” You might not believe the words when you begin saying them. Say them anyway. Keep repeating them. Repeat them over and over and over. You can even create a voice recording of yourself saying these positive words. Hearing yourself saying them can have a powerful healing affect.
Practice using positive self-talk every day. And every day, when you notice yourself feeling overwhelmed and your thoughts spinning, remind yourself: I am ready for anything that this day brings.
A “mantra” is a phrase that you repeat over and over. A mantra can help you set your intention for the day. When you start your day by repeating a positive, empowering phrase, it can help you set your intention on having a positive, empowering day. This is your mantra for today. I am ready for anything that this day brings.
