Trauma 101

What is trauma?

Trauma can arise from various situations that deeply threaten a person's safety, well-being, or sense of self. Examples of more commonly understood traumatic events include experiences like intimate partner or family violence, where someone is physically or emotionally harmed by a close relationship. Car accidents, which can lead to severe injuries or loss of life, are also recognized as traumatic incidents. Similarly, the horrors of war, with its violence, destruction, and loss, can cause profound psychological wounds. However, trauma isn't limited to these dramatic events. Betrayal, such as being deceived by a trusted friend or partner, can inflict significant emotional harm and erode one's sense of trust in others. Other situations that may cause trauma include ongoing emotional abuse, workplace harassment, or discrimination based on race, gender, or sexuality. These experiences can deeply impact a person's sense of safety, trust, and self-worth, leading to lasting psychological distress and symptoms of trauma.

Trauma survivors often blame themselves for the traumatic incident, and often feel a sense of shame and anger toward themselves. This course helps trauma survivors realize that they aren’t to blame for the traumatic incident, and helps them understand how to manage the challenging symptoms of trauma that arise each day. Things like social isolation, obsessively thinking about the incident or replaying imaginary conversations in your mind, poor diet, lack of self-care, and lack of social support, emotional reactivity, numbness, and other symptoms can be alleviated if you know how.
